Strange Fruit werd geschreven door Abel Meeropol, een linkse, joodse High School leraar uit de Bronx. Het is het waard de tekst ook even te lezen:
Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.
Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.
Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.
Meeropol haalde kennelijk zijn inspiratie uit deze foto van de lichamen van Thomas Shipp en Abraham Smith, die op 7 augustus 1930 door een volksgericht werden gelyncht omdat ze een blanke arbeider zouden hebben vermoord en zijn vriendin zouden hebben verkracht.Een derde man, James Cameron, wist te ontsnappen en stichtte later het Black Holocaust Museum. Toen hij in 2006 op 92-jarige leeftijd stierf was hij de enige bekende overlevende van een racistische lynching in de Verenigde Staten.
